ANGLETECH SPEC COMPONENT PACKAGES.
By Kelvin Clark
When you look in the Specifications and Prices sections of our website
within the format you're looking at (Long Wheelbase, Short Wheelbase, etc),
you will find factory specification of the models shown, "Rans Stratus XP"
for example. At ANGLETECH we also offer as many as four additional
varieties. These formats are based on our building a bike from a
manufacturers frameset with an upgraded component selection for a specific
application, something we call ANGLETECH SPEC. These are noted by suffixes
after the model name, ST27, GL81, SHO, XXHO, for example.
This section is to cover in more detail what each package involves, and
written in a manner that will be understood by everyone, including those of
you with other central gifts in life outside of "bike tech" component
knowledge.
ANGLETECH FUNDEMENTALS:
Cold Forged aluminum components. The aluminum cranksets, brakes,
hubs, and derailleurs we use are cold forged. Cast aluminum is liquid
aluminum poured into a mould and cured. Melt Forged aluminum is liquid
aluminum poured into a mould, then pressurized to make the part more
molecularly dense. Cold forging is a non molten part made from solid
material, then compressed to make it molecularly more dense. Simple Explanation: Stronger, longer life, and can be made with less mass, so the
lightest.
Cartridge Sealed Bearings. Low/no maintenance, easier rolling under
load than loose ball systems. Cane Creek Classic headsets are a lifetime warranty
part, Phil Wood crank bearings and hubs are the best in the world and
outlast anything else. Other hubs and crank bearings we use are also sealed
bearing type.
Hand Build Wheels. Hand built wheels are better than robotic built
wheels. In addition to the build, we use DT or Sapim spokes, and
most of our rear wheels use what is called an Assymetically drilled rim.
The spoke holes are offset to the left to make a wheel with even spoke
tension. Simple Explanation: Stronger wheels without added weight.
Chain: We use premium grade chain that shifts better, and lasts
longer.
ST27

Sport Touring/Touring, 27 speeds. Dura Ace bar end shifters rather than Gripshift, lighter shifting with better front derailleur tuneability,
Phil
lifetime crank bearing, Sugino cold forged cranks with hard
anodized long wearing ramped and pinned chainrings, 11-34 cassette
with lower hill climbing gear
without trading off high end gearing, KMC X.9 premium chain, hand built
sealed bearing wheels, Cane Creek Classic lifetime alloy headset. The good stuff at
a reasonable price.
GL81

The same idea as above but
with SRAM's Dual Drive internal rear hub. Gear inch range triples over a
standard system. An underdrive range 27% easier to pedal than normal, and a
36% overdrive range that allows pedalling down hill, even on a mountain
pass.
TO27D

Upgrade the ST27 with a Dura
Ace front derailleur, carbon seat pan, and disc brakes.
HO27

High Output 27 speeds. A
racier spec similar to ST27 but with lighter minimal spoke aerodynamic
wheels.
SHO

Super High Output. The speediest with hollow pin, cut out plate ultralight
chain, ultra light wheels, carbon fiber crankset with a titanium crank
spindle. XXHO if you go ultimate 10 speed. SRAM carbon bar end shifts, hollow technology cassettes.
HD27

Heavy Duty 27. For
those in the 300 plus # weight class, this includes Phil Wood hubs and crank
bearing, high volume high pressure tires and other details for trouble free
performance, high efficiency but very little added weight to the bike. Easy
Racer Tour Easy and Rans Stratus and Stratus XP only.
GRAND TOUR

Ultimate tandem spec.
Phil hubs and crank bearings for ultimate strength and easiest
rolling.
A choice of IPS cranks (which allow independent coasting from one
another) or traditional direct drive cranks.
203mm Disc brakes to keep rim heat down and stopping power up.
Dura Ace front derailleur which allows the best shifting in the
market over the widest possible chainring range.
Premium KMC X.9 chain.
11-34 rear cassette for maximum gear range.
IRD XC Pro Thumbie shifters, the lightest touch with most finesse of your
shift.
Lifetime Cane Creek Classic headset.
The highest performance and most durable tandem component group available
